Jabez Ho ARCH 1101: Clients' artwork comments

The two artworks that I have chosen to comment on are ‘Castle in the Air of the Cave-Dwellers’ by Fiona Hall and ‘Beaten Track’ by Rosalie Gascoigne.

Hall is known to be an artist who continuously emanates ideas and thoughts from various fields of knowledge. Her artworks do not only appear to be nice and attractive, but it also grabs our attention to ponder upon some of the central issues brought forth by the various artworks.
In this case, the artwork regards knowledge and the natural world. She got inspired to do this artwork following her trip to the Amazon where she obviously got so much closer to nature itself.
The artwork is made of resin stuffed into larger than usual brain moulds. This is then decorated by adding some profound yet artistically striking insect structure. This signifies the importance of nature as a way of broadening our horizon to learn about more things.

Gascoignes’s work mainly consists of assemblages produced using trash, unused stuffs and things she somehow came in contact with. Beaten Track, a contemporary artwork, is made of sawn / split soft drink crates affixed to plywood, of dimension 122.5 × 110cm.
It is interesting to hear from her account that she uses materials that ‘have been open to the weather’, and she even regard disaster area as good searching spots. Nevertheless, her thinking and skill in assembling used material is definitely something worth admiring.
